Data for COVID-19: Assessing the Use of Non-Traditional Data During a Pandemic Crisis 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the increased use of data to address the crisis. This report assesses the use of data during the pandemic and provides guidance for future use in dynamic crises. The review identified four prominent uses of data: health, mobility, economic, and sentiment analysis, and made recommendations for how decision-makers might better use non-traditional data in future crisis management efforts.

PeaceTech Topic Map: A Research Base for an Emerging Field 2022

PeaceTech refers to the use of technology to facilitate peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts. It encompasses a range of tools and techniques that can be used to promote dialogue, facilitate communication, and support conflict resolution processes. The report created a baseline for development and implementation of policies in this field.

The State and Islam in Soviet Central Asia 2019

This MA thesis examines the relationship between Islam and the Soviet state from World War II to the 1980s. The Spiritual Administration of the Muslims of Central Asia and Kazakhstan (SADUM) played a key role in this relationship as it represented an attempt to harmonize Islam and socialism and promote a new vision of Islam. SADUM’s exchanges with similar institutions in the Middle East and its role as a religious authority in Central Asia highlight the Islamic image of the Soviet Union.

Narrating Antisemitism in Historical and Contemporary Turkey 2018

This book chapter examines the experience of Jews in Ottoman and present-day Turkey, including issues of diversity, social conflict, and religious intolerance. It begins with a brief history of the Jewish community in the Ottoman Empire and its decline, then looks at the impact of the Turkish Republic on Jewish communities in Turkey. The study concludes with observations about Turkish antisemitism and the issues facing Jewish communities in Turkey today. It also explores the evolution of antisemitism in Turkey, considering how it has been shaped by different discourses and historical transformations. (pdf)

Intolerance between ethnic, religious and political groups in Turkey 2016

This unpublished study specifically focuses on tolerance and intolerance among various groups in Turkey, which has become increasingly authoritarian and polarizing, and considers the patterns of intolerance among ethnic, religious, and sexual identities. It also looks at the history of the Turkish Republic and how the concept of “Turkishness” has evolved and impacted the relationships between the state and minority groups. The data for this study was collected in 2013 from 1725 respondents in 7 cities in Turkey and was used to examine levels of tolerance and intolerance towards “others.”

Status Consistency and Trust in Central Asia 2014

This unpublished paper studies the relationship between social-economic status and trust among people in Central Asian societies, which are undergoing rapid social and economic changes. The data for the study was collected from the World Values Survey and four groups were established based on individuals’ education and income levels. The paper discusses the importance of social trust among people and its correlation with social class and social stratification. It also examines how status inconsistency, which often occurs during socio-economic changes, impacts trust.
